THE JURY

 

Writer/director Ramin Bahrani’s films have screened at the Venice, Cannes, Sundance, Berlin and Toronto Film Festivals. Bahrani has won numerous awards including the FIPRESCI critic’s prize for best film in Venice (GOODBYE SOLO, 2009) and a Guggenheim Fellowship among many others. He has been the subject of retrospectives in venues such as the MoMA in NYC. In 2010 legendary film critic Roger Ebert proclaimed Bahrani as “the director of the decade.” Additional credits to Bahrani’s name include MAN PUSH CART (2005), CHOP SHOP (2006), GOODBYE SOLO (2009), PLASTIC BAG (short, 2009), AT ANY PRICE (2012) and LIFT YOU UP (short, 2014).


 
 

Shari joined the programming team in 1998 and currently focuses on American and World Cinema dramatic features, as well as films that experiment and push the boundaries of conventional storytelling. She is also the curator and driving creative force behind New Frontier at Sundance, a program highlighting work that expands cinema culture through the convergence of film, art and new media technology. As Co-Director of Programming for Outfest from 1998-2001, she founded the Platinum section, which introduced cinematic installation and performance to the festival. From 1993-1996, Frilot served as Festival Director of MIX: The New York Experimental Lesbian & Gay Film Festival. During that time, she also co-founded the first gay Latin American film festivals, MIX BRASIL and MIX MÉXICO. Shari is a filmmaker and recipient of multiple grants from institutions including the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Media Arts Foundation. She is a graduate of Harvard/Radcliffe & the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program.


Journalist and author Carolyn Giardina — who specializes in coverage of entertainment technology and filmmaking — is contributing editor, tech at The Hollywood Reporter and writes its Behind the Screen blog. Her credits as an editor, reporter or columnist include CinemaEditor, SHOOT, Film & Video, The IBC Daily and SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal. She’s also co-author of Exploring 3D: The New Grammar of Stereoscopic Filmmaking (Focal Press, 2012). Earlier this year, Carolyn received American Cinema Editors’ Robert Wise Award, which recognizes a journalist for contributions to film editing. In 2011, she was presented the International Cinematographers Guild’s Technicolor William A. Fraker Award for journalistic contributions to cinematography.


As President of Production, Victor Moyers heads the creative group, overseeing all aspects of development and physical production for Broad Green Pictures. Most recently, Victor produced Green Room and added Buena Vista Social Club - Adios and Brain on Fire to the company’s growing internally produced slate. Prior to joining the team, Victor worked as a freelance Producer and Unit Production Manager on titles that include Skateland, Afternoon Delight, and Break Point - Broad Green’s first in-house production.


Lucy Walker has directed five documentary features: Devil's Playground (2002), Blindsight (2006), Waste Land (2010), Countdown to Zero (2010), and The Crash Reel (2013). Her notable shorts include The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom (2011), and The Lion's Mouth Opens (2014). Her films have won over 100 awards (including two at Sundance and two at Berlin) and an Emmy, and she’s been nominated for two Academy Awards, an Independent Spirit Award, a Gotham Award, and a DGA Award. Walker was born in London and started directing theatre in high school. After graduating from New College, Oxford with a B.A. (Hons) and M.A. (Oxon.) with first class honors, she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to attend the graduate film program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where she earned an MFA and supported herself by DJing. She currently lives in Venice Beach, California.
